Southside Chicago blues from Junior Wells, with a soulful voice, with a little touch of West side guitar from Buddy Guy, and superb piano playing from Otis Spann. If you like the blues, especially Southside blues, this CD is a gem. Top numbers, to my ears; "I could have religion" and "It's too late brother"/5(40).

The standard path for blues musicians was to start out as street musicians and at house parties and eventually make their way to blues clubs. The first blues clubs in Chicago were mostly in predominantly black neighborhoods on the South Side, with a few in the smaller black neighborhoods on the West Side. New trends in technology, chaotic.

"Southside Blues" features all of the songs Elmore James recorded for the tiny Chief Records label in And from tiny labels comes some rough-sounding recordings. This is not to say that they are unlistenable, but they are a step down from James' recordings for Meteor/Flair/Modern Records, where he was laid off a year before/5(2).
